Ceramic coating quoting
A working playbook for quoting ceramic coatings — per-panel vs flat-rate, the warranty-backed pricing tiers, the upsells customers actually buy, and the four pricing mistakes that kill ceramic margin.
1. Build your tier ladder before you quote anything
Customers can't compare quotes if every quote has different scope. Build three tiers tied to warranty length (the only number customers internalize) and let everything else flow from there:
- Entry — 1 year, single-step prep, consumer-grade product (CarPro Reload, Adam's Graphene Spray)
- Mid-tier — 3 years, single-step paint correction, professional product (Cquartz UK 3.0)
- Premium — 5+ years, multi-step correction, certified manufacturer warranty (Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra, Modesta)
The tier names matter less than the warranty number. “Three years” is the price-anchor.
2. Pricing ranges by tier and vehicle size (2026)
Pulled from DetailingStack tenant data + April 2026 IDA member benchmarking. Markets higher than median (NYC, LA, Seattle, Bay Area) tend to land 20–30% above; lower-cost metros (Phoenix, Orlando, Nashville) tend to land 10–15% below.
| Tier | Sedan | Crossover | SUV / van | Truck / 3-row |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-year coating (entry) | $650–$850 | $750–$950 | $900–$1,150 | $1,050–$1,300 |
| 3-year coating (mid-tier) | $950–$1,200 | $1,100–$1,400 | $1,300–$1,650 | $1,500–$1,900 |
| 5-year coating (premium, certified) | $1,400–$1,800 | $1,650–$2,100 | $1,950–$2,500 | $2,250–$2,900 |
| Multi-step paint correction (add-on) | + $400 | + $475 | + $575 | + $675 |
3. Per-panel vs flat-rate — when to use each
Flat-ratefor the 80% of quotes you'll do — sedans, crossovers, and small SUVs in good paint condition. Customers prefer one number; you prefer predictable revenue per slot.
Per-panel for everything weird:
- Trucks, vans, motorhomes (extra surface area)
- Vehicles needing meaningful correction (multi-step compound + polish)
- Coating add-ons to wheels, glass, trim
- Color-change PPF or partial wraps
The per-panel quote is internal — turn it into a flat number for the customer-facing quote in your booking software. Saves 5 minutes per quote and 100% of the “why is the trim extra?” conversations.
4. The four pricing mistakes that kill ceramic margin
- Including unlimited correction in the base price.Heavy swirl marks can take 4 hours of polishing on a single hood. Either cap the correction included (e.g. “single-stage compound, up to 90 minutes”) or quote correction as a line item.
- Promising warranties your supplier won't back.A 5-year warranty without manufacturer support is a 5-year liability. Get certified or don't sell the tier.
- Forgetting wheels, glass, and trim.Customers expect “ceramic” to mean “everything coated.” If your base only covers paint, list the wheel / glass / trim add-ons in the same quote (5–8% bump for the bundle, 15% if quoted separately later).
- Quoting verbally over the phone.A spoken quote becomes “they said about $1,500.” A written quote with a deposit link becomes “here's the $1,650 quote you approved.” Always send written.
5. The upsells that actually convert
Sorted by attach rate from DetailingStack tenant data:
- Wheel-face coating — 70% attach. $150–$250 add-on, 30 min of work.
- Glass coating (windshield + side windows) — 55% attach. $200–$300, 45 min.
- Annual top-up appointment — 40% attach when offered as a yearly plan. Recurring revenue gold.
- Interior leather + fabric protection — 35% attach when bundled with paint coating. $250–$450.
- Paint touch-up of small chips before coating — 25% attach. $75–$200.
6. The quote template
Every ceramic quote should include:
- Vehicle year/make/model + photos at quote
- Paint condition assessment (gloss meter reading if you have one; visual otherwise)
- Tier + warranty length
- Itemized line items (paint, wheels, glass, trim, correction)
- Total, deposit amount, expiration date (default 14 days)
- Aftercare instructions (no wash for 7 days, etc.)
DetailingStack quotes ship with vehicle data pre-filled, JSON line items, and a public customer-approval link with a deposit collection. Save the template once; reuse forever.
Frequently asked
- How long should a ceramic coating quote take?
- Five minutes if you have a template. Longer if you're guessing. The number-one quoting mistake is freestyling each one — quote drafts in your booking software so you can iterate on margin without doing arithmetic in your head every time.
- Per-panel or flat-rate — which is right?
- Flat-rate for sedans + crossovers + small SUVs (you'll do hundreds of these). Per-panel for trucks, vans, motorhomes, and any vehicle with custom prep work (rock chips, swirl marks past stage 2). Quote per-panel internally, present flat-rate externally where you can.
- How much prep should the quote cover?
- Most coatings include a single-stage paint correction in the base price. Heavy correction (multi-step compound + polish) is a 25–40% upcharge. The rule: never apply ceramic over swirls — you're sealing in the damage. Photo-document the paint condition at quote and flag corrections required.
- Should I offer multi-year warranties?
- Only if your supplier backs them. Cquartz UK, Gtechniq Crystal Serum, Modesta — all have multi-year manufacturer-backed warranties IF you're certified and use their inspection cadence. A 5-year warranty without a back-end is a 5-year liability. Don't write checks your supplier won't cash.
- What's the right markup over product cost?
- 8–12× retail. A $200 bottle of Cquartz UK does 4 vehicles → $50/vehicle in product. Quote at $1,200–$1,500 for the install on a sedan. The price is for your time, expertise, and the warranty obligation, not the bottle.
- How do I price PPF (paint protection film)?
- Per-panel. Hood + fenders + bumper (a partial front-end PPF) is the most common package — $1,200–$1,800 depending on metro. Full-front (hood + fenders + bumper + mirrors + headlights + A-pillars) is $2,200–$2,800. Full-vehicle wrap is $5,500–$8,500. Always quote in person — film consumption depends on the panel size.
